Ideas in Progress
Labayen Dance and its Artistic Director, Enrico
Labayen – Isadora Duncan Awardee for Outstanding
Achievement in Choreography (USA), Patnubay ng Sining
at Kalinangan Awardee of The City of Manila for Dance
in 2004, and one of the artists named as a Global
Filipino by the Filipino Channel (TFC), an ABS-CBN
international channel – is holding a concert called
“Ideas in Progress” on October 27, 2005 at the
Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). The show is
co-sponsored by the CCP.
The concert will focus on cutting-edge and courageous
dance ideas, and will feature works by international
and local choreographers and dancers. One of these is
a piece by international choreographer Mahmud Ibrahim
from Malaysia called “Citrawarna”, a contemporary
treatment of traditional Malaysian dance performed by
two Malaysian dance artists and three Philippine
artists. Mr. Ibrahim is one of the top choreographers
in Kuala Lumpur who is famous for his contemporary
versions of Malaysian traditional folk dance, and is
also an award-winning choreographer.
“Deer Dance” is a Mexican piece by Jim Paolleli
from the USA, a New York native who was the Co-Artistic Director of the
international folk dance company of New York which has toured all over
the world. His piece is based on a Mexican legend about the deers’ struggle
to survive against the hunters. This will be the first time Mr. Paolleli’s
work will be seen in the Philippines.
“On The Way”, choreographed by Enrico Labayen, is a
new piece about the right and choice of women to bear children. Another
new piece by Mr. Labayen is “Trance Planet Suite”.
These pieces are all world premieres, and are only a
few of the new, unique and innovative that will be
performed during the evening. This performance is the
result of a three month long international dance
workshop led by Enrico Labayen as well as other
international experts in dance, choreography, lighting
design, stage management, costume design, and physical
therapy for dance.
“Ideas in Progress” will be an exciting venture into
what dance will be like in the future, and is a very
rare event in this country.
